Eels, Crayfish & Boat

0.450m x 2.500m
Eels and Crayfish swim through the Ivel. A horse-pulled barge (shown here) laden with coal and wood are pulled along the canal (River Ivel Navigation opened in 1758). Coal, grain and timber transported in this way brought prosperity to Biggleswade. The canal was extended in 1823 but closed 50 years later following the appearance of the railways.
