A horse-pulled barge laden with coal and wood are pulled along the canal (River Ivel Navigation) opened in 1758 it was used to transport grain and coal and timber (shown here) It brought prosperity to Biggleswade, extended in 1823 but closed 50 years later following the appearance of the railways.
